Overwhelming in size and content - overused and heavily marked book

This was my first William Blake book. First and foremost, the book was almost falling apart as it was so used and marked and written on the margins all over by the person before me and also the paper seemed old. This book should not have been sold. I think the previous owner wanted to let it go and did not know how as he had, it seems, a strong relationship with this book over the years. I could not look in it as it was overwhelming. I donated it to the local library.

Also, I don't think this is a right book for someone who wants to be introduced to Blake and his poetry. That was another thing. But if the book was new, then I could have returned it. But it was not worth to spend more money to return it.

The Best Edition!

Mr. Keynes' edition of Blake's complete poetry and prose is the one I've used not only at Shimer College, but also in Russia and China when I taught Blake there. Mr. Keynes arranges Blake's writings chronologically. The reader can thus more clearly see how Blake's mythic system evolves. Clarity matters when a reader falls into a universe as visionary and fluid as William Blake's.
Each poem is a like a magical brick in the mystical structure Blake ultimately builds. His work begins in Innocence, a world where science, imagination, love, and wild beasts blithely dance in balance. When the cruelty, greed, and fears of Experience blight the peaceable kingdoms then society and the human soul split into warring factions.
Blake has been called apocalyptic. In his late great prophetic books families, lovers, societies, and the ecosystem fall to bits. But Los, Blake's heroic artist, "keeps the divine vision in times of trouble." Techno-science and institutionalized greed overshadow the earth, but Los keeps on building Golgonooza, the gorgeous city of art which ultimately connects heaven and earth. This can bring Jerusalem (the feminine divine)back into the heart of Albion (the universal humanity). When the feminine divine suffuses masculine power all things coalesce in a cosmic orgasm of art, science, pleasure, and prayer. "There is no body distinct from the soul!" Mr. Blake proclaimed in his Marriage of Heaven & Hell. "Everything that lives is Holy!" cries Oothoon, whose indestructible purity embraces the love that's "free as the mountain wind." She's become a role model for some exuberant Shimer students.
To truly partake of Blake please treat yourself to at least a few of the full-color illustrated editions that are now wonderfully affordable. The Dover editions are a bargain--but I order the Blake Trust (Princeton University Press) editions for my classes as well as Sir Geoffrey Keynes' lovingly edited Complete Writings. Buy this book! He has published articles in various journals including Psychometrika, The American Statistician, Communications in Statistics, Multivariate Behavioral Research, Journal of Systems Management, Quality Progress, and The American Anthropologist and has given numerous talks at American Statistical Association, Decision Sciences Institute, and Making Statistics More Effective in Schools of Business conferences. While at Baruch College, Dr. Levine received numerous awards for outstanding teaching.

David F. Stephan is an independent instructional technologist. During his more than 20 years teaching at Baruch College-CUNY, he pioneered the use of computer-equipped classrooms and interdisciplinary multimedia tools, was an associate director of a U.S. Department of Education FIPSE project that applied interactive media to support instruction and devised techniques for teaching computer applications in a business context. A frequent participant in the Decision Sciences Institute’s Making Statistics for More Effective in School of Business mini-conferences, he is also a coauthor of Business Statistics: A First Course and Statistics for Managers Using Microsoft Excel. He is also the developer of PHStat, the statistics add-in for Microsoft Excel distributed by Pearson Education.

Readable, but doesn't dumb down the material.

I took (and liked some of) a lot of math and statistics as an undergrad years ago. I haven't used much of it since then. I thought this book would be too basic for me but think it is pretty good. It's not a dumbed down "For Dummies" book with bad humor. It's not a math survival book aimed at MBA or pre-MBA students that want to know the bare minimum to get by. But then, its not a really dry textbook that everyone struggles with except the three uber-geeks at the front of your classroom.

The examples look fairly relevant to ordinary people. The layout of the book strikes a nice balance between either tons of white space, or book pages crammed with tiny text and no margins. I can read the book from 3 feet away with scratched/dirty glasses.

Excel files a big plus

I like this book. It is easy to follow along and is full of examples and exercises. I got this book in particular so that I could practice doing stats and data visualization in R. I did have to convert the .xls to .csv beforehand (though I could have used the XLConnect library). It's easy to take one question or table and make a lot of different visualizations out of it. NOTE: this does not teach you R.

I had to buy this book for a college statistics class. The book is not overly helpful in actually teaching statistics if you were on your own but is not a bad reference with a class and youtube.

As the rhyming text extols the virtues of trees and describes the planting and growth of a group of seeds, the jewel-toned illustrations of the natural world immediately draw the eye. The elevated language tends more to poetry than sense: "Warm wishes sowed the greening land/and flocking birds rejoiced the stand/and sang a story that uplifts,/the tale of ten trees' simple gifts." The text then introduces these trees, each chosen to represent a particular characteristic (seemingly at random, for the afterword describing the various species gives no hint as to why they were assigned their titles). The blue spruce represents tolerance, the yellow poplar stands for love, and so on. A listing of state trees is appended. This has quickly become my favorite book. THe story almost brings me to tears and the illustrations are wonderful. I want the illustrations for my walls. It is nice to find a book that you can read over and over, but also feels great to give as a gift to everyone on your list. THis is a must have!

Substance, eloquence and utterly magical beauty

This book caught my eye at a pediatric center last year, and I recently succeeded in tracking it down. What an amazing find!

Fist of all the illustration is exquisite, magically emulating the purity and joy inherent in young children. Images are soothing and uplifting, as is the message. The first line in the book, "Everything good begins with me" is a compelling symbol for all that follows. In fact, contrary to what one reviewer wrote, this book is rich with substance and meaning.

What greater message can we hope to instill within our children than "everything good begins with me"? This is the vital yet seldom exemplified, grown-up concept of "accountability", bundled into a simple phrase any child can understand. While the imagery captivates, related messages of courage, hope, honesty, love, and gratitude effortlessly filter into the reader's consciousness.

I'm ecstatic to have discovered this book and to share its beauty and eloquence with my children. In fact I purchased additional copies for friends, family and teachers. Do yourself a favor and get your hands on this book. It's one you'll want to treasure and pass on for generations.

Be happy....plant a tree

The opening line is perfect, "Everything good begins with me." A tiny acorn tumbles to the ground and issues this statement to its mother tree. Then his adventure begins. He snuggles deep into a cloak of golden leaves, takes a long winter's nap and emerges in the warm Springtime wide awake, ready to sprout and stand tall amidst his prestigious elders.

Beautiful illustrations of different types of trees appear in the following pages and each one gives an account of his value, worth and contributions to his surrounding world. The trees are characterized by words such as hope, love, courage, gratitude, peace, compassion, tolerance, generosity, honesty, and happiness. They model to the human reader the exact attributes humans need to make their world a more loving and better place to inhabit. The world will then be a thriving and healthy community with everyone and everything living together in harmony and peace and doing their share to make the planet the best it can be.

The book is written in rhyme and the message is positive and inspirational. The illustrations are magical and bring the text alive. The journey from a tiny seed to a luscious, thriving forest encourages us to look after our world so our children can stand in the midst of "life" and know as they grow up they will need to become good stewards of their earth, as one day they will be passing it on to their children's and their children's children.......and so goes forth the circle of life with everyone having a part to play to keep it going.
