About the Author
Craig Stanford is a professor of anthropology and biological sciences at the University of Southern California, where he also co-directs the Jane Goodall Research Center. He has conducted field research on primate behavior in south Asia, Latin America, and East Africa. He is well known for his long-term studies of meat-eating among wild chimpanzees in Gombe, Tanzania, and of the relationship between mountain gorillas and chimpanzees in the Impenetrable Forest of Uganda. He has authored or coauthored more than 130 scientific publications. Craig has received USC’s highest teaching awards for his introductory biological anthropology course. In addition, he has published fifteen books on primates, animal behavior and human origins, including Beautiful Minds (2008) and Planet Without Apes (2012). He and his wife, Erin Moore, a cultural anthropologist at USC, live in South Pasadena, California, and have three children.

John Allen is a research scientist in the Dornsife Cognitive Neuroscience Imaging Center and the Brain and Creativity Institute at the University of Southern California. He is also Research Associate in the Department of Anthropology, Indiana University. Previously, he was a neuroscience researcher at the University of Iowa College of Medicine and a faculty member in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, for several years.  His primary research interests are the evolution of the human brain and behavior, and behavioral disease. He also has research experience in molecular genetics, nutritional anthropology, and the history of anthropology. He has conducted fieldwork in Japan, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and Palau. He has received university awards for teaching introductory courses in biological anthropology both as a graduate student instructor at the University of California and as a faculty member at the University of Auckland. In addition to Biological Anthropology, he is also the author of Medical Anthropology: A Biocultural Approach (with Andrea S. Wiley; second edition, 2013), The Lives of the Brain: Human Evolution and the Organ of Mind (2009), The Omnivorous Mind: Our Evolving Relationship with Food (2012), and Home: How Habitat Made Us Human (2015). John and his wife, Stephanie Sheffield, have two sons, Reid and Perry.

Susan Antón is a professor in the Center for the Study of Human Origins, Department of Anthropology at New York University, where she also directs the M.A. program in Human Skeletal Biology. Her field research concerns the evolution of genus Homo in Indonesia and human impact on island ecosystems in the South Pacific. She is best known for her research on H. erectus in Kenya and Indonesia, for which she was elected as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). She is the President of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists and past editor of the Journal of Human Evolution. She received awards for teaching as a graduate student instructor of introductory physical anthropology and anatomy at the University of California, was Teacher of the Year while at the University of Florida, and received a Golden Dozen teaching award and the Distinguished Teaching Medal from NYU. She has been twice elected to Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. Susan and her husband, Carl Swisher, a geochronologist, raise Anatolian shepherd dogs.

About the Author
Carlos Coronel is currently the Lab Director for the College of Business Computer Labs at Middle Tennessee State University. He has more than 29 years of experience in various fields as a Database Administrator, Network Administrator, Web Manager, and Technology Specialist. He has taught courses in Web development, database design and development, and data communications at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Steven Morris completed his Bachelor of Science and Ph.D. from Auburn University. He has taught courses in Database Design and Development, Database Programming with Advanced SQL and PL/SQL, Systems Analysis and Design, and Database Management at the graduate and undergraduate levels at Middle Tennessee State University. He has many years of experience consulting on a database projects across a broad range of industries. Dr. Morris has published numerous professional articles and has served on the review boards of several journals.

There is so much information in this manual that the easily intimidated may decide that silence is sometimes better than bearing in mind all the rules of conversation. Shepherd, a calligrapher and writer (The Art of the Handwritten Note), covers almost every type of social or intimate situation, including how to make introductions, requests, apologies, and a variety of tips for speaking with children, elderly people and in-laws. Shepherd also addresses those difficult moments when we all have trouble knowing what to say: she advocates first checking when a bedridden friend will welcome visitors and allowing a seriously ill person the freedom to express anger at his or her condition. Not all will agree with her argument that it's appropriate to speak in a louder voice to someone whose first language is not English. Some of the author's 10 rules of conversation are obvious, while others seem based on her own likes and dislikes. And some standard rules that she reiterates—such as not speaking about religion or politics—have loosened up a bit in recent years. (Dec. 27)

Useful book for awkward but aspiring introverts

This is a great book for any person who wants to operate smoothly in a our modern "networking" society, but is not sure of the best thing to say in all situations. This book gives you ways to get into, through, and out of all kinds of social conversations. I just wish I had read this book when I was much younger. This book will be my new high school graduation gift, as the ability to converse using this book's recommended methods will help any person greatly in life, both personally and professionally. This book is outstanding for anyone looking for ways of smoothing their social graces, and should prove invaluable for any person who might have become a bit too reliant on a gadget for communication and feels a bit lost when trapped with people face-to-face.

So far (4 chapters in) I like what Shepherd has to say and find it very helpful and educational. My only discomfort is that she doesn't provide any other way or opinion than her own. There is always another perspective, especially with the nuances of people. I do like that she has chapters about talking to men, young, and older.

I am surprised that this concise and eloquent book is not better known, and I'm baffled by some of the lukewarm reviews. This really is a beautiful collection of scenarios and responses and a mindset for approaching conversations and relationships.

I cannot think of a single person I know who would not benefit from reading this. In fact, I think I will buy a few extra copies to hand out as gifts. I have only ever done that for one other book.

Laura Ziukaite-Hansen received her M.A. in Scandinavian Studies from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. She has taught the Norwegian language and literature at the UW-Madison and UC-Berkeley. She is the author of Norwegian Practical Dictionary, also available from Hippocrene Books. Currently, she lives in the Boston, Massachusetts metropolitan area.

Great for learning basic grammar

Before going to Norway a couple of month ago, I wanted to learn some Norwegian. I bought this book (with 2 CD's) plus the Pimsleur set of 16 lessons. This turned out to be an excellent combination, as they complemented each other well. This book is excellent as a grammar book. The lessons each include exercises that are well thought out, and really reinforce what you've learned. The down side is that the conversations on the CD's go way too fast to keep up with. That's where the Pimsleur CD's came to the rescue - since they go very slowly and reinforce pronunciation. I did find the Beginner's Norwegian CD's to be helpful, and had to listen to them numerous times, but would not have done well on pronunciation just from these.
There were some quirky things about the grammar lessons - several times words were used in the lesson that had not been introduced yet. These words came in later chapters. Also, the written version of the conversations from the CD would have abbreviations and numbers (written 23, for example) that you would have no idea how to pronounce in Norwegian. These should have been written out with Norwegian words for the novice. The author should have tried these out on an English speaker who knows no Norwegian (and maybe she will in her next edition). That student will be able to point out all the words I am talking about which are not written out or not learned until a later lesson. Overall though, I found this to be very helpful! The Pimsleur CD's (reviewed elsewhere) have no written material with them, so this book was great as far as being able to read and write in the language. I was actually able to read newspaper headlines and articles (with the help of a dictionary) when I was over there.

Perfect Norwegian introduction

As the title says, this is just Introduction to Norwegian, but still perfect.

Book is something between school-book and common language book. For understanding e.g. verbs/adverbs/nouns etc. you should read the vocabulary at the end of the chapter, and after that read the story (BTW this is the advice written by the author).

Althought the fact that CDs are hard to use when listening them using the radio, you can use more comfortable way of listening - PC. Among the other things, I like that there are two versions of stories - basic and slower.

Great for serious learners of Norwegian.

Very good book for Norwegian study. This book will teach you basic Norwegian conversation and writing skills if you are dedicated to studying the language. I cannot give it five stars because it is very dense and is not suited well to casual learners. If you can dedicate a significant amount of time to the language this book will teach you a very good base for the language, however it will require a significant amount of study time. If you cannot dedicate at least a half hour a day to studying Norwegian, you should look elsewhere for your studying materials.
