The essential guide to classical book design

there is little to say other than the fact that this book is essential reading for all current and aspiring book designers. Tschichold's views seem limiting at first, but his knowledge is based on years of careful research into the basis of our written culture. many will choose to deviate from his instruction in small or great ways, but to practice the craft of book typography (or typography in general) without this information would be unwise.

A must read for any designer.

This collection of 23 essays on book design and typography should be read at least once by all typographers and students of design. Written over a period spanning 42 years, these essays cover many aspects of typography from paper color to tight typesetting to page proportions. A few of the ideas presented in the essays may indeed be outdated now (due mainly to the economic freedoms in modern digital design), but they are few and are still important from an historical persective. Folloowing the rules of design presented here will help ensure a well designed book that does not detract from the contents in any way and best serves to allow that content to speak for itself. Even if you want to always break the rules of design, isn't it better to understand why and how those rules came to be? Of interesting note is that Jan himself was in his youth a radical rulebreaker in his designs, but he learned when it was best to work inside and outside the rules to present the best effect, his design legacy shows how effective he was, and how influencial he remains to this day.

Read it. Learn it. Live it.

High-handed, even pompous, Tschichold doesn't coddle the "I gotta be me" crowd. He lays down the laws of type and, by God, they work. You can bend, even break, his rules and still do great work. But you must do so consciously for a specific purpose, not willy-nilly because you feel like it. As Robert Burton put it "A dwarf standing on the shoulders of a giant may see farther than a giant himself." This giant has broad shoulders, indeed. Bert Casey has been a professional performer and teacher in the Atlanta area for over 25 years. Bert plays several instruments (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, mandolin, banjo, and flute) and has written 5 books (Acoustic Guitar Primer, Electric Guitar Primer, Bass Guitar Primer, Mandolin Primer, and Flatpicking Guitar Songs) and has made four videos (Introduction to Acoustic Guitar, Introduction to Electric Guitar, Introduction to Bass Guitar, and Introduction to Mandolin Video ). He is a professional instructor at ABC Music, which he owns, and also records extensively in his studio, where he has done the sound track to several movies. He performed several years with Home Remedy and is currently performing in the Atlanta area with his band Blue Moon.

Nice Fakebook

Bert Casey's fakebook contains 150 songs frequently performed by bluegrass and newgrass groups. As the subtitle says, 50 fairly well-known gospel songs are part of the mix. While most of the songs are in the key of G major, that key really does work well for most of the tunes, especially for lap-style resonator guitar players, Spanish-style guitar players, and banjo players. Some of the tunes, though, are more often played in other keys (A major, for the most part) by fiddlers. The transposition shouldn't be too difficult, especially if the guitarist uses a capo; however, it would have been nice to have some of these tunes printed both in a guitar-oriented key and in a fiddle-oriented key. One particularly nice touch, but one that takes up quite a bit of real estate on the pages, is that the lyrics are printed in a fairly large type, making reading them at a distance (such as from a music stand) easy. Keep in mind that the vast majority of these pieces are true American folk music, which means that there are alternative melodies and some variations that players might know that don't quite match the melodic transcriptions. That, however, is par for the course in the world of fakebooks, be they bluegrass, jazz, or pop. One quibble, and the reason that this book didn't receive a 5-star rating, is that the standard paperback binding is not nearly as practical in a performance or jam session setting as a spiral-bound or plastic loop-bound volume would have been--it's just too hard to keep the book open on a music stand. Overall, though, a good collection of standards that helps remind players who know the songs of the tunes, chords, and lyrics, and gives those players who are less familiar with the songs a solid jumping-off point to learn the pieces.

The book

The book is essentially a collection of 150 songs played by bluegrass bands. All songs have chord, melody notation and lyrics. There are also chord charts for guitar, mandolin and banjo. Most of the songs are arranged in a key of G, you can use capo to play in different key. Very recommended for bands and playing at bluegrass jam sessions.

Great starter for Bluegrass

The first thing I did was take the book to Staples and have it spiral bound. This lets the book lay flat on the music stand. This book is used by my local monthly Bluegrass Jam. A great feature is the artist list at the bottom of each page. It allows me to look up the song on youtube. Being new to Bluegrass, I am not familiar with many of the tunes.

Los dos vincularon el grave deterioro de las minor�as cristiana y jud�a ("gentes del Libro", como eran reconocidas por los mahometanos) en el mundo musulm�n de Espa�a al gobierno de los almor�vides, monjes guerreros procedentes del Sahara que profesaban una interpretaci�n en extremo rigorista del islam y que fueron bien recibidos en la pen�nsula por ulemas y alfaqu�es, que de antemano se hab�an ya inclinado por un rigorismo no menor que el de los reci�n llegados. Los moz�rabes, cristianos arabizados que vivieron bajo el dominio musulm�n, representaban m�s del noventa por ciento de la poblaci�n durante el primer siglo de dicho dominio y en el siglo XII se hab�an reducido a menos de la mitad. Durante ciertos periodos disfrutaron de una calma relativa, pero en algunos otros hubieron de sufrir persecuciones. La primera parece que sucedi� en C�rdoba durante la d�cada que va del a�o 850 al 890. Entonces fueron deportados en masa al norte de �frica, desapareciendo todos ellos de las zonas urbanas. Cuando la vida flu�a sin esas tensiones, eran considerados "dimm�es" por la legislaci�n isl�mica, como "no creyentes" a los que, igual que a los jud�os, se les permit�an sus pr�cticas religiosas, si bien no pod�an construir iglesias nuevas ni reparar las viejas. Adem�s, ten�an que pagar impuestos de los que estaban libres los individuos de religi�n musulmana. A ello se debieron seguramente las m�s de las conversiones al islam. �stos eran los mulad�es.

Very entertaining and informative. The author appears quite knowledgeable, covering the history, construction and the various types of feathered warbonnets, with many illustrations; great for both coffee table and research shelf. I have read similar works and come away disappointed, but this book seems to really have it all. Heartilly recommended for the serious student and the hobbyist wishing to construct a proper replica.

This book is an attempt to meet that need by using the theory of classical electrodynamics to unify space observations. The contents of this book are based on classroom notes developed for an introductory space physics course that the author has taught for many years at the University of Washington. Students taking the course normally have had an undergraduate course in electricity and magnetism but they come with very little knowledge about space.
