Our notions of the "Okies" who migrated to California during the 1930s Dust Bowl, according to historian Shindo (Louisiana State Univ.), have been shaped largely, and falsely, by Dorothea Lange's documentary photography, Woodie Guthrie's music, and John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, later made into a film by John Ford. Each of these artists, he argues, used the Okie "victims" to advance a liberal agenda with small regard for their subjects' real concerns. Shindo's thesis derives in part from James Gregory's American Exodus (LJ 9/15/89), which is more balanced. One wonders, for example, in reading that Guthrie's "use of the office of folksinger aligned him with intellectuals and civil servants against the migrants," whether he is judging too harshly and whether, in fact, he has his own agenda. About the Author
Kitty O. Locker was an Associate Professor of English at The Ohio State University, where she taught courses in workplace discourse and resarch methods. She has also taught at Texas A&M University and the University of Illinois at Urbana. She received her BA from DePauw University and her MC and PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana. She is very well known for her research background and her research in progress includes work on collaborative writing in the classroom and the workplace. She has served as the Interim Editor of the Bulletin of the Association of Business Communication and in 1994-5 as President of the Association for Business Communication. From 1997 - 2000, she edited ABC's Journal of Business Communication.

Stephen is an Associate Professor at Columbus State Community College and a Lecturer at The Ohio State University. He teaches courses in business and technical communication, composition, creative writing, journalism, public relations, film and literature and freshman experience. He has also taught public relations at Ohio Dominican College. He received an MA in English and BAs in journalism and English from Ohio State. Steve has presented papers at conferences such as the Association for Busienss Communication, Northeast Modern Language Association, College English Association of Ohio, and Conferences on College Composition and Communication. Steve has served on ABC's Two-Year College Committee and on ABC's Diversity Committeee.

Very good introduction to business writing

I bought this textbook for a course called Business Communications which is intended to pick up where College Composition 1 & 2 leave off. As a student still working to develop my writing skills I though that this book was a very good introduction to business writing. It has a lot of good information and tips for the up and coming business writer.

Great Text and the same as the 6th edition

Great book for anyone planning on working in the business world. It's up to date and very informative. Except for some question in the review of every module it is same as the 6th edition many college are using. Save yourself the money and buy this.

Business Communications Building Critical Skills

This is one of the few textbooks that would merit a cover to cover review. The examples give the student a very good form to follow. The only drawback is the examples written are not very realistic.
