Excellent book for couples studies!

As an artist, I am always looking for books to make my life easier when looking for effective poses to use as reference. This book is exactly what I was looking for and delivered all I expected and more.
Drawing bodies can be hard and drawing two bodies together can be mind-boggling. This book really helps break it down into managable pieces and provides a myriad of poses to study. And some of the manga tricks are very helpful and different than the traditional drawing methods taught in college courses.
One of the best parts of the book is the fact the author included same gender couples in the studies, very important when studying the shape, contour and solidity differences of the male and female form and how they relate to each other in same gender and mixed gender pairings. The pages on the differences about how the arm lengths of men and women line up when wrapped around another body, which changes if the second body is male or female, is fascinating.
This book does contain nudity so the muscles can be studied and referenced so I recommend it for the serious art student or the self-taught artist who has already worked with life studies who is now wanting a book to continue these studies.
The book also includes poses of people in bed together so those inclined not to view these sections should not look at them.
This book does not teach basic drawing skills so the person purchasing this book should already have those skills before using this book.

Drawing Couples Explained

Drawing people in relation to one another is challenging and has eluded me for a time. After reading through this book, it became easier for me to portray them. Hayashi did a wonderful job of breaking down every aspect in simple, easy to understand terms and images. For example, the walking couples section is broken down into several sub-sections with other areas done in a similar fashion:

-walking side by side

-holding hands while walking

-pulling arms while walking

-female holding onto male hand while walking

-female being pulled by male while walking

-clinging to arm while walking (male & female, same-sex, rear view)

-arm over shoulder (carrying arm over shoulder, arm behind back, two males, two females)

-placing hand on shoulder

-wrapping arm around the waist

This book focuses on male and female couples but Hayashi also included same-sex relationships. Not all couples scene are relationship based but rather, they're platonic such as two guys or gals hanging out. But be aware that there is nudity in this volume and it does includes more expressive couple actions such as kissing, embracing, and the more intimate bedroom scene. This book is highly recommended and even more so for those interested in making shoujo manga.

Another Success

This is another great book from the how to draw manga series, it hows you how to draw female/male couple's, male/male couple's, and female/female couples. As is traditional with this series it mostly shows how to draw the characters using blocks.
This book however starts on the assumtion that you can already draw faces/bodies etc...and therefore I'd advise that you purchase an earlier book first (i.e compiling characters or getting started).
This book does briefly show how to draw characters 'making love', but it's not graphic, this book also contains nudity.
Overall this book is excellent for people who enjoy drawing manga ^_^

Next to the exhortation at the beginning of Moby-Dick, "Call me Ishmael," the first sentence of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice must be among the most quoted in literature. And certainly what Melville did for whaling Austen does for marriage--tracing the intricacies (not to mention the economics) of 19th-century British mating rituals with a sure hand and an unblinking eye. As usual, Austen trains her sights on a country village and a few families--in this case, the Bennets, the Philips, and the Lucases. Into their midst comes Mr. Bingley, a single man of good fortune, and his friend, Mr. Darcy, who is even richer. Mrs. Bennet, who married above her station, sees their arrival as an opportunity to marry off at least one of her five daughters. Bingley is complaisant and easily charmed by the eldest Bennet girl, Jane; Darcy, however, is harder to please. Put off by Mrs. Bennet's vulgarity and the untoward behavior of the three younger daughters, he is unable to see the true worth of the older girls, Jane and Elizabeth. His excessive pride offends Lizzy, who is more than willing to believe the worst that other people have to say of him; when George Wickham, a soldier stationed in the village, does indeed have a discreditable tale to tell, his words fall on fertile ground.

Having set up the central misunderstanding of the novel, Austen then brings in her cast of fascinating secondary characters: Mr. Collins, the sycophantic clergyman who aspires to Lizzy's hand but settles for her best friend, Charlotte, instead; Lady Catherine de Bourgh, Mr. Darcy's insufferably snobbish aunt; and the Gardiners, Jane and Elizabeth's low-born but noble-hearted aunt and uncle. Some of Austen's best comedy comes from mixing and matching these representatives of different classes and economic strata, demonstrating the hypocrisy at the heart of so many social interactions. And though the novel is rife with romantic misunderstandings, rejected proposals, disastrous elopements, and a requisite happy ending for those who deserve one, Austen never gets so carried away with the romance that she loses sight of the hard economic realities of 19th-century matrimonial maneuvering. Good marriages for penniless girls such as the Bennets are hard to come by, and even Lizzy, who comes to sincerely value Mr. Darcy, remarks when asked when she first began to love him: "It has been coming on so gradually, that I hardly know when it began. But I believe I must date it from my first seeing his beautiful grounds at Pemberley." She may be joking, but there's more than a little truth to her sentiment, as well. Jane Austen considered Elizabeth Bennet "as delightful a creature as ever appeared in print". Readers of Pride and Prejudice would be hard-pressed to disagree. --Alix Wilber

Beautiful Storybook coloring book based on Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen – printed on both sides of the page

As a young girl, I remember reading it late into the night with a flashlight under the covers. While I missed many of the nuances of the story at that time, the romance itself was enthralling enough for me to read it over and over again. Later in life, I used this novel for several papers in various English classes. So, I guess you can say I am a big fan of the story.

Sometimes that can and have made me very critical of takes on this novel. While I admit I am disappointed that there are not more designs which include Elizabeth and Darcy or other of the characters, I think the designs are quite lovely and will be lots of fun to color. Some of my favorite excerpts are included, including “It is universally acknowledged...” so the story is fun to read as I color. Just coloring my first choice of designs in the book made me reach for my Kindle to read the story in full once again.

The cover is in black print on white (with elements you can color) with gold foil highlights on the front. Both covers fold out and there are some elements on the flaps that can be colored but the inside of the covers are really just pretty patterns with nothing to color except background.

As I noted, there are lovely designs of gloves, flowers, and whatnot. The book is a little light on characters. The designs are intricate and detailed in spots but should not pose any particular issues in coloring apart from the fact the book is printed on both sides of the page.

This is what I found while coloring in this book and testing my coloring medium of the paper.

Paper is heavyweight, white, slightly smooth, and non-perforated.

Sewn Binding which makes it easy to remove several pages at a time by snipping a few threads. This method makes sure you don't lose portions of the design if you want to remove pages.

Designs merge into the binding area.

Some designs spread across two pages with essential elements merging into the binding area.

My copy of the book lined up very well on the two page designs.

I could get the book to lay fairly flat by breaking (or creasing) the spine.

Alcohol-based markers bleed through slightly on this paper.

Water based markers (except for brush end Tombows) left the slightest indistinct shadow on the back of the page. Tombow did not leave a shadow.

Gel pens and India ink pens did not bleed through this paper.

Colored pencils did well with this paper. I was able to color with light or heavy pigment, layer and blend using both my various wax and oil based pencils. I use a pencil style stick blender for my tests. Hard lead pencils did well and did not dent/score through to the back of the page.

Classic Lines Edition

This is a review of the Splinter Classic Lines edition. These beautiful watercolor illustrated editions are a must have for all JA fans who are collecting. The cover is in the style of a French fold with a smooth buttery paper texture. The inside paper is a light-medium weight in that slightly grainy texture and there are hints of tiny threads in it like the kind you'd find on paper dollars. All in all, It will be great on your shelf and for reading as well!

I loved it to bits!

"She was stronger alone, and her own good sense so well supported her, that her firmness was as unshaken, her appearance of cheerfulness as invariable, as with regrets so poignant and so fresh, it was possible to be."

I have SUCH a girl crush on Elinor Dashwood. Good, kind, practical Elinor - empathetic, compassionate to a fault, and as capable of deep feeling as her demonstrative mother and sister Marianne. She was the ideal prism through which to experience this story of the love and devotion between sisters, through romantic trials and disappointments. I loved this book to pieces.

I never thought a novel by Jane Austen could leave me in so much suspense, put me through so much agony for the fate of its characters, and make me laugh out loud so often. I didn't know Austen could be so sharp, witty and sarcastic.

Her novel contains very little of what we would think of as action. Plot details are revealed through conversations between different characters. Oh, those conversations! Austen's insight into human nature and foibles was absolutely first rate. Her novel left me wondering what effusive Mrs. Jenningses, selfish Mr. Willoughbys and sly Lucy Steeles she must have known in real life.

I never could get through an Austen novel before trying this audiobook. The formal language in which she wrote left me befuddled, sure I was missing the meanings beneath the surface of her words. Juliet Stevenson's incredible narration freed me from that difficulty. Her performance was fresh, nuanced and lively, teasing out all the irony, humor and pathos of the words.

I finished the book with a little sigh of happiness for Elinor and Marianne and regret to have to leave their world so soon. I cannot wait to listen to more Jane Austen.

Shepard: Hedgehog

I think Isaiah Berlin's classification of writers as hedgehogs (those who have one great theme) and foxes (those who have many themes) can be a useful classification of writers. Jim Shepard is definitely a fox. In this collection, Love and Hydrogen, much like last year's Pulitzer Prize nominated collection Like You'd Understand is a dizzying array of original and inventive stories. There are quirky tales of dysfunctional families: "gun lobby," "Runway," and "The Morality of Parents." He has a number of sports related stories, some of which infuse historical events into them like "Batting Against Castro" (about baseball and politics in pre-revolution Cuba) as well as "Ajax Is All About Attack" (which is about 60s politics in The Netherlands and soccer). One of Shepperd's greatest strengths is the adolescent coming of age story: "Mars Attacks," "Glut Your Soul On My Accursed Ugliness," "and "Spending The Night With The Poor." It is also apparent that Shepperd often infuses his stories with scientific or historical research: gay Nazis in love in a zeppelin ("Love and Hydrogen"), WWII battles behind occupied lines ("The Assassination of Reinhard Heydad"), deep sea exploration ("descent into Perpetual Night") and exploration of uncharted lands ("Astounding Stories") to name a few of his forays into history and science. I'd like to read one of his novels and see how he manages to sustain a story into a longer narrative.

We have become the inexplicable

Reading Jim Shepard's `Love and Hydrogen' right after Adam Haslett's overwrought and over-rated `You Are Not a Stranger Here' was what I needed to re-affirm my faith in short fiction as an art form. As a reader I want a fulfillment of what fiction promises: a mimesis; that the author will try to inhabit other lives and situations and render them in a way that produces something novel for me. I don't need self-affirmation or a lesson. I want a story. And in a short story collection I want stories. Many times, such as in Haslett's book, the situations are so repetitive that you suspect that the author is rendering his own life through these stories, that self-indulgence and egotism over-ride art or any interest in art. Sorry for writing of my opinion of Haslett's work, but it brought into stark contrast why I liked this collection so much more.

Shepard's work is most notable for its incredible diversity of setting, voice and theme: a teen-age girl's first person account of a friendship strained by class division (Spending the Night With the Poor), the disaffections and fascination of a Yugoslav footballer in progressive 1960's Holland (Ajax is All About Attack), the thrill and resignation of a World War II German test pilot (Climb Aboard the Mighty Flea) are just a sample. He can approach a story as a straight ahead narrative (The Mortality of Parents) or as an ironic romp(The Creature from the Black Lagoon) and yet he always seems to find his way to the dark heart of the story. He is at his best when he takes on narratives or personae that we think we know and produces something startlingly fresh: `We Won't Get Fooled Again' a brief history of The Who from the eyes of their most enigmatic member, bassist John Entwhistle, is hilarious and heart-rending.

Nor is Shepard ideologically bound; in his exceptional story `John Ashcroft: More Important Things Than Me' he paints a self-portrait of the man that is at once more generous and chilling than any number of partisan biographies could hope to accomplish. Characters who would be no more than walk-ons or caricatures in another writer's story take centre-stage with Shepard, and you get the feeling that no character is automatically invested with more insight or dignity than any other. In all, it is a refreshing approach and one that declares a fuller, more humanistic artistic vision than ninety percent of the reheated autobiographies that masquerade as fiction today. The only weak point I found in the collection was `Alicia and Emmet with the 17th Lancers at Balaclava' where the interweaving narratives felt somewhat strained. It is a minor drawback, like a complaint about the scuff-marks on Fred Astaire's floor.

At first this incredible array of voices and settings may seem like a self-conscious tour de force, that the author is trying to keep you on your heels with off-speed pitches because he doesn't have any real `stuff', but the writing is so good and the voice so authentic that the novelty of reading a story about something other than domestic conflicts seems secondary. I was thinking for a word to describe this work, which reads like an anthology of great writing, and I could only come up with fearlessness, that Shepard has no fear, and that alloyed with his skill and curiosity and utter decency as an artist, he has given us a work of depth and intelligence and beauty. Here's the last paragraph of the final story in the collection �'Climb Aoard the Mighty Flea' where a World War II German pilot, knowing a horrific war has already been lost, straps himself into the first rocket powered fighter plane,

'No one's speaking. Our ears are on the slipstream. Our thumbs are on the cannon triggers. Our hearts are in the dive. We have become the inexplicable. We have beome the unbelievable. We are our own descendants, the children we have always wanted to be.'

John Ashcroft & the creature from the black lagoon

This is the best short fiction collection I've read in several years. Shepard's stories are both economical and lean--there isn't much here that's over 20 pages long, but Shepard packs into those 20 pages a complexity of theme and character that most writers can't approach even at novella length. It is a dizzying collection, by turns violent, funny, and wrenchingly sad. Shepard writes in a dazzling array of voices, handling each with effortless authority. He is particularly good at adolescents (see also the amazing Project X), but these stories also give voice to a Yugoslav football player, a German test pilot, John Entwhistle, John Ashcroft, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon. Superb.

About the Author
Gabriel L. Negretto (Bah�a Blanca, Buenos Aires, Argentina) is Professor of Political Science at the Centro de Investigaci�n y Docencia Econ�micas (CIDE), located in Mexico City. He holds a law degree from the University of Buenos Aires, and both a Master of International Affairs with specialization in Latin American Studies and a Ph.D. in Political Science from Columbia University. Negretto has been visiting fellow and associate professor at the University of Notre Dame, Princeton University, The New School for Social Research, Universidad Torcuato Di Tella, and Columbia University. He has published numerous articles on political institutions, institutional design, and constitutional change in American, European, and Latin American academic journals such as the Journal of Politics, the British Journal of Political Science, Comparative Political Studies, the Law and Society Review, Latin American Politics and Society, the Journal of Latin American Studies, Government and Opposition, and Desarrollo Econ�mico. A major contribution

In this book, Negretto makes an important contribution to the study of the endogenous causes of institutional design. The book develops a two-level theory to explain the adoption of constitutional rules regarding presidential election (and re-election) and presidential powers in 18 Latin American countries between 1900 and 2008. The two-level theory underscores that not only partisan interests, but also cooperative goals guide the behavior of political elites during the process of constitutional change.

A rigorous and inspiring book

In this book, Gabriel Negretto makes a valuable contribution to the study of constitutions and to the theory of institutional change.

From a theoretical point of view, Negretto’s theory sets a new standard in the literature by offering a general, deductive and consistent theory of constitutional change. Furthermore, the book contributes to a recent agenda in contemporary Political Science: the study of institutions in contexts of institutional weakness. This agenda attacks a usual assumption among students of formal institutions, i.e., that these produce the same effects regardless of the context in which they are embedded. In a similar vein, the author demonstrates that, in contexts of institutional weakness, those institutions that are reputed to be highly stable in institutionalized environments can –and actually happen to be– quite unstable. The argument nicely combines intuitions both from historical institutionalism and rational choice theory: Negretto shows how critical junctures shape the set of options that political actors face and, at the same time, how constitutional change is a consequence of the instrumental preferences of political actors aiming at their own political survival.

From a methodological point of view, the book exemplifies the state of the discipline by making a proficient use of the so-called mixed methods. It successfully combines quantitative analysis with rigorous, in-depth, qualitative case studies of four major instances of constitutional change: Colombia (1991), Ecuador (1998), and Argentina (1949 and 1994).

As a graduate student of Political Science I found the book most inspiring and useful, at least for two reasons. First, it showed me how solid theoretical arguments can be empirically tested in a way that tells us something about reality without falling in the temptation of intricate modelling – what Jon Elster has called “hard obscurantism”. Second, it provided nice intuitions that could be eventually applied to my own research agenda about subnational politics in Argentina. For these reasons, I strongly recommend this book to students of political institutions and, more in general, to anyone interested in Latin American politics.

A groundbreaking research on institutional change

"Making Constitutions" provides a useful and comprehensive perspective on current discussions of the New Institutionalism, that everyone interested in Latin-American politics and political institutions will find appealing. Negretto goes beyond the traditional logic of New Institutionalist logic, developing better accounts of institutional origin and change by the addition of historical and contextual elements, and the adoption of an endogenous perspective of institutions.

Negretto stresses the dual nature of constitutions: as cooperative structures and as power structures, differing from authors that consider only one of the two dimensions to explain constitutional change in Latin America. Instead, Negretto offers a comprehensive model to address the institutional changes that have been studied in isolation.

As a PhD Student of Public Policy, I found this book to be very useful to understand the dynamics of institutional change from an innovative point of view, whose scope may be extended beyond the topics studied by the author; for example, to the analysis of administrative reforms, such as civil service laws, or bureaucracy controls. Similarly, the model can be useful to assess relationships between national and subnational governments.

Students who read this book will encounter a very illustrative example of the rigorous use of mixed methods technique: Negretto offers a tidy analysis of constitutional change in Latin America, profusely explaining case selection, how he builds the variables, and why he opts for a complementary strategy, in such a way that even those who are not very involved with the literature of institutional change may enjoy the reading of this book and find it appealing.

This numbered, limited edition, authored by Gary R. Frank, has been fully approved by Hector Robinson son of William E. Robinson. Each book has a bookplate signed by Hector Robinson. It is a short (52pages) but exhausting bibliography on Chung Ling Soo. This is one of the books in the bibliography of the new Jim Steinmeyer's book.
