There Are More Up to Date Books

This is an adequate review of the topic, but to get more up to date details I would suggest a newer book. I did find that I wanted more background detail at times. I would have also liked more details of what was taking place in the White House. Overall, not a bad book, but I wish I had spent the time with something more up to date.

Funny, thoughtful, profound, and surprisingly enjoyable for a book about dead bodies

Having read Mary Roach’s newest book, Grunt, in which she talks about the science of keeping soldiers alive, I decided to read her first one, Stiff, for two reasons. One was to see how much she’d changed as an author, but two – and the bigger reason – was a fascination with the subject. Stiff‘s subtitle is The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers, and the book is about exactly that: what happens to our remains after we die? Like she did with Grunt (and, I’m presuming, all of her books), Roach divides the book into independent chapters, each focusing on different aspects. There’s the bodies that end up in mortuary schools, as well as those that end up dissected by medical students. There are cadavers used as crash testers, those that end up at the Body Farm (where decay is studied, among other things), those that are used to help understand airplane crashes…and those that were used to understand what happened to Jesus and others who were crucified. And there’s much more to be found here, including bodies as compost, as art, and more.

It’s a fascinating subject, and one that put Roach on the map – and having read the book, it’s not hard to see why. Done wrongly, the book could seem insensitive, ghoulish, or just depressing. But Roach celebrates these cadavers, reminding the reader just how much has been gained from this research and just how important these bodies have been to not only medicine, but to our society as a whole. At the same time, she never shies away from the discomfort people feel; indeed, one of the most compelling threads in each chapter is discussing with the various people she meets how they manage to maintain a proper emotional balance when they’re working with the dead all the time.

Roach is more of a presence in Stiff than she is in Grunt; it feels like more of a first book, and something she might grow away from as she went. But that also feels like a key part of why the book works; after all, death is a fundamentally personal event, and there’s little way to read Stiff and not spend time thinking about what you would want done with your own remains, be it cremation, burial, donation, or more. And Roach builds her own debate into the book, concluding the book with a chapter that finds her pondering what to do with her own remains, having done all these studies and researches into our possible fates.

But lest that sound too heavy, Stiff is every bit as engaging and fun as you would hope from Roach’s reputation. Her digressive footnotes and odd asides are still evident, her willingness to ask questions no less charming, and her ability to bring a light tone to even heavy subject matters no less welcome. More than that, she finds depth and thoughtfulness to discuss beyond what you would expect, to the point where you get the impression that she could write a whole second book about bodies and never run out of things to say. That she does all this while being incredibly informative, demonstrating a gift for conveying complex things quickly, and managing to even tell stories, is just testament to her skills as a writer, and the deservedness of her reputation.

Terrific Book

Mary Roach is my favorite non fiction author and this is the first book I read by her. I completely devoured it in just 2 days. it perfectly balances the absurdity of the facts and well as the myths. it draws the readers attention to the humor in something as somber as death. I learned a lot from this book and it's one of my favorite reads. each chapter focuses on a different aspect of death from the scientific standpoint. it's full of facts, fallacies, and there's even pictures. if I could give it a sixth star, I would

Could Not Put It Down!

I Love, Love, Love this book! I cannot speak highly enough about this one. I loved it so much I bought the book, bought a second copy for a friend and got it on kindle. I loved all the history behind the story, her amazing research, and humor she was able to bring to such a serious subject matter. It made me think about my own body and what I want to do with it once I leave my earthly home for my Heavenly one. Right now I am down to donating to science and The Body Farm. If you have a curious mind, and want to read something intriguing, odd, and well written, this is the book for you. I could not put it down!

Shakers, Rappites, and Zoarites were joined by new religious communities in the nineteenth century such as Hopedale, Oneida, Amana, Bishop Hill, and Bethel-Aurora. Ephrata was a celibate settlement. The brotherhood was not bound by a written document. Life at Ephrata was austere.

Shaker theology is unique. Shakers rejected the doctrine of the trinity. Mother Ann Lee had worked several miraculous cures. Initiates to the order had junior status in the beginning. Converts were recruited from the religious revivals. Furnishings were plain and simple. Every Shaker building had the air of a chapel. The Shakers were credited with various inventions. Revivalism exerted an influence in American communities.

The Rappites, followers of George Rapp, six hundred in number, came to America in 1804. They were Lutherans. The community was moved three times. The dissolution of Zoar took place in 1898. Zoarites were also German and renegade Lutherans whose main amusements were musical. Dancing was prohibited. The members of Zoar did not show the fanatical zeal of the Pietists and the Shakers.

Robert Owen and his followers settled in the Rappite village of New Harmony. A new Owenite community was established at Yellow Springs, Ohio. By 1830 the Owenite communities ceased to exist. Oneida had a system of complex marriage. Adin Ballou founded the Hopedale Community. The Northampton Association was cooperative, not communistic. Brook Farm had an idyllic setting near the Charles River. In 1843 Albert Brisbane started the Phalanx. Amana is a product of the Pietist Movement.

Psalms in Hymn form and rhyme!

I love reading the writings of Sir Isaac Watts because EVERYTHING he writes is Spiritually edifying. This is a great book in which he carefully composes the Psalms in poetic beauty. Each paragraph captures the essence of each Psalm and each Scriptural Truth yet rhymes in perfect harmony. He was a gifted spiritual giant. These verses were complied as hymns for the church to sing before music was a part of early church worship. Yet, they are true to the written Truth of God's Holy Word! You'll enjoy them. He incorporates the prophetic verses with references to the Savior Christ to come! Exciting church hymnal material (without the musical notes) and an exciting view of church history. If you love the Psalms and love the Bible....you'll love this early book of writings from one of our church fathers!

Born in 1674, Isaac Watts is known as the "Father of English Hymnody" and credited with writing 750 hymns. Many of these are currently in use, "Oh God our Help in Ages Past" being one of the most familiar. This book is the result of his daunting goal to write translations --in rhyme and meter--of the Psalms of David, in everyday language for congregational singing.This book of his translations is a wonderful source for a music history research paper.

Poor Kindle version

The Kindle edition is clean but lacks stanza divisions or a true table of contents. Hopefully I can find (or create) a better version. I've heard so much about Isaac Watts and would love to be able to read the full volume and not just the few popular hymns I already know ("O the Wonderful Cross," "Joy to the World," etc.)

About the Author
Elwyn Berlekamp was born in Dover, Ohio, on September 6, 1940. After spending two years as Assistant Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and five years at the Bell Telephone laboratories, in 1971 he became Professor of Mathematics and Electrical Engineering-Computer Science at Berkeley.His book Algebraic Coding Theory received the best research paper award of the IEEE Information Theory Group. Eta Kappa Nu named him the "Outstanding Young Electrical Engineer" of 1971 in the U.S., and he has been President of the IEEE Information Theory Society. In 1977 he was elected to membership of the US National Academy of Engineering.

John Conway is a Fellow of Gonville and Caius College and a former Fellow of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, and is Reader in Pure Mathematics at the University of Cambridge. He has held visiting professorships at several universities and has made original contributions to many branches of mathematics, notably transfinite arithmetic, the theory of knots, many-dimensional geometry and the theory of symmetry (group theory).

Richard Guy has taught mathematics at many levels and in many places-England, Singapore, India, Canada. Since 1965 he has been Professor of Mathematics at the University of Calgary and he is a member of the Board of Governors of the Mathematical Association of America.He edits the Unsolved Problems section of American Mathematical Monthly; he wrote the volume on Number Theory for the series:Unsolved Problems in Intuitive Mathematics and is preparing another on Combinators, Graph Theory, and Game Theory. He is a keen member of the Alpine Club of Canada.

Claimed again...and I need more!!

Blake is slowly uncovering the threat against Hannah. Though poor naive Hannah has no clue as to who would want to hurt her.

Hannah is also struggling with her growing desires for Blake, while Blake is becoming distant.

With one part of the puzzle solved, a small re-ignition of the passionate flame between Hannah and Blake...the plot thickens when someone from Hannah's past bursts back into her life...but they are not who she thought they were and why they are there is where the book leaves the reader on a cliff hanger...Part 6 cannot come quick enough!!

Nice quick read with a touch of action, mystery, romance and a bit of kinky sex...Thank you Ms King!!! :)

I've tried

I bought the whole series... I've tried to like it. I want to like it. It has just gotten progressively worse with each "episode" in the series and I think I have one more to go. I hate leaving bad reviews. This is just bad. I get that in a shorter story some things have to be "fast tracked" for the sake of the story, but this is so unrealistic. And a marriage license is only valid for one year if the names on them are real... and Gustav's isn't. Even more ridiculous is the fact that she is trying to justify her actions after just telling Blake how much she loves him, etc., by saying that "technically Gustav is still her groom" because they "did not call off the wedding" ??? Are you serious? One, he isn't a groom. Two, what was the whole scene of Hannah standing in front of the church saying that the wedding wasn't going to happen from Volume 1 if not calling off the wedding? It's back and forth, hot and cold. Frankly, I wouldn't care if she slept with Gustav because Blake as a main lead is anything but. He's a prissy, blow hard who is nice one minute, sweet one minute and a complete jerk the next. I find nothing likable about him. And we notice, I haven't even touched on the grammar and spelling errors. If the story had been decent, I could over look those but by this point, it's like why even bother to notice. I will finish the series and start the one I really wanted to read... 31 Ways..
