Thousand Island inspired talks, 1895

The Thousand Island Park Retreat is mentioned in many biographies of Swami Vivekananda. This book is a day by day record of the talks given June 19th to August 7th 1895 thanks to the stenographic skill of one of the Retreat participants Ellen Waldo. Swami Vivekananda was 32 at the time, possibly at the height of his powers. He was willing to train serious devotees to carry on the work in America. One can reflect on the notable devotees who were present such as Mrs. Ole Bull, Josephine MacLeod, Miss Greenstidel (Sister Christine), Mary Funke, Miss Dutcher and Ellen Waldo. Of the 12 participants Swami Vivekananda initiated two as Sannyasins and five as Brahmacharins.
The inspired talks in the second half of the book are about Sri Ramakrishna, a talk on Christ, the historic Paper given at the Parliament of Religions in 1893, two poems and four letters. The book under review is Inspired talks My Master and other Writings by Swami Vivekananda and edited by Swami Nikhilananda. Ramakrishna Vivekananda Center, New York, c.1958, 1970. 259 pages, with appendix, glossary and index.
