Worth the money at twice the price

I have been learning to build Android apps for several months now, and while I can find a solution to nearly any coding issue online the documentation for UI design and implementation is extremely lacking and generally poorly written - especially regarding newer features (3.0 and up). This book fulfills a need and does so very well. It not only covers the common basic UI design, it includes necessary (and often overlooked) details such as when and why to use certain features and which parameters apply to which views. It also covers more advanced UI features in depth, but clearly and without overwhelming the reader or being too simplistic.

For the rank novice programmer:
If you aren't yet comfortable with Java, the Android SDK or XML you might want to get a bit more experience before you dive into this book. While the author does walk the reader through the development of an application, the focus is on the implementation of the UI features - the logic code is not explained in-depth and you'll have to look at the source code to find out where and how the implementation takes place. There is very little explanation of the code, so you'll need to do a lot of self-teaching with the Android documentation if you plan to use the book now.

For the experienced novice:
If you're ready to implement UI features like fragments, maps, action bars, various notifications, OpenGL, animations, and render script but can't find the documentation you need online, this book is definitely for you. There are also a lot of little tips, tricks and details that make the book more than worth the price.

For the advanced programmer:
Honestly, I'm not to that point yet, so I'm not sure how useful the book will be for you. The layout does not lend itself to quick code reference (which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5), but it is well organized enough that finding information won't be difficult and the layout works well for educational material. I'm using the kindle version and bookmarking sections and tidbits I know I'll want to return to. The TimeTracker application itself is also a good reference source.

Thanks! I really needed this book, and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I was at a point of being extremely frustrated and discouraged while trying to implement the features I knew I wanted, but couldn't find good documentation/tutorials for. I'm enjoying my work again, and excited about learning all this content.

Great pace, Logical ordering, Clearly written

I appreciated the pace and detail of Android UI Fundamentals. Many books of this nature either go WAY overboard with esoteric nuances or breeze too quickly over essential points -- this book does not do that. Great read -- especially if you are like me and know a bit about the Android framework but hadn't yet written a line of Java for your first test Android app.

Very good UI book for the ones who know the UI basics

This book is very good for the ones who already familiar with the android UI and wants a detailed professional study about all the UI possibilities. The book is very comprehensive including from the most least detail till the advanced UI level.
It covers ICS UI and the difference between the previous Android versions.
To my opinion it is not good for a first book about Android, but all the other developer will find it useful.
Highly recommended !!!

A discrete dynamical system can be characterized as an iterated function. Given the efficiency with which computers can do iteration, it is now possible for anyone with access to a personal computer to generate beautiful images whose roots lie in discrete dynamical systems. Images of Mandelbrot and Julia sets abound in publications both mathematical and not. The mathematics behind the pictures is beautiful in its own right and is the subject of this text. The level of presentation is suitable for advanced undergraduates who have completed a year of college-level calculus. Concepts from calculus are reviewed as necessary. Mathematica programs that illustrate the dynamics and that will aid the student in doing the exercises are included in the Appendix. In this second edition, the topics covered are rearranged to make the text more flexible. In particular, the material on symbolic dynamics is now optional, and the book can easily be used for a single-semester course dealing exclusively with functions of a single real variable. Alternatively, the basic properties of dynamical systems can be introduced using functions of a real variable, and then the reader can skip directly to the material on the dynamics of complex functions. Additional changes include the simplification of several proofs, a thorough review and expansion of the exercises, and substantial improvement in the efficiency of the Mathematica programs.

Amazing motivational introduction

An excellent short motivational reading / introductory course material. Starts ground up and uses very simple hands-on examples to demonstrate the fascinating behavior of non-linear dynamic systems (chaos, fractals, etc). Covers most of the basic methodology.
The book also has a lot of excellent exercises for reinforcing the material, for different difficulty levels.

This is an excellent book for teaching for mathematics students. Besides the standard material it contains a chapter about some numerical methods as dynamical systems. I strongly propose that a third updated edition is made.

Invaluable guide to a happy marriage

I was married at a pretty early age and was absolutely certain that I was marrying my soul mate. At the age of twenty-one, I was blissfully happy and ready to spend my life with that one person. He had other plans and I felt that devastating loss for many years, disillusioned with all things committed-oriented. Things changed and I have been married again now for almost a year. Older and much wiser, we both are determined to stay connected with one another and keep the fires burning. While love is a given, I agree with author Marko Petkovic that continuous action is needed, and so appreciate his "47 Little Love Boosters for a Happy Marriage".

This insightful and very detailed guide takes a close look at how couples drift apart, quite naturally, and gives action items that one or both of you can start, making some positive changes to close that distance. Petkovic's five love rituals aren't rocket science by any means but they absolutely produce astronomical results when they are applied in a real world relationship. I know because I have started making a conscious effort to do each of these things for my spouse on a daily basis. The results are real and tangible in a closer and more intimate relationship than when I wasn't concentrating on these things. What's even better - they're a joy to do.

Much needed loving simplicity in this fast paced world

As I read this book it touched me to the core. The world we live in is so fast paced and it is easy to get lost in the flow. I believe my husband and I have a good relationship but I see now that for some time we took things for granted. We simply assumed each of us was happy. After reading this amazing, straight to the point book I realized we needed to invest as much effort into "us" as we did in other parts of our lives, work and family. This book makes an awesome job at showing the simple things we can do to make a real difference. The little things that touch us the deepest.

It’s well written and I also loved the quotes. The best part is that advice is easy to understand and follow. The Golden Collection to get you on the right path and the audio is awesome.

It is clear the author put his heart into creating this excellent book and I thank him for his honesty and sharing his own experiences’. It is one of the best books I have read and I definitely recommend it to everyone, not just those whose marriage is in trouble. Share some kindness with everyone around you, and simply show your spouse they still make your heart flutter.

The advice in the book is good but the real magic and fun happens when you download the free PDF from the author's site. It is filled with romantic pictures, inspirational quotes and ideas of how to make your partner feel wonderful. Simple ideas like saying thank you to your partner can make them feel appreciated. Other ideas like sending a loving email will brighten your partner's day. I had to laugh out loud when I saw Love Booster 17. It is really funny. There is also a cheat sheet of all the ideas so you can print them off and start doing them immediately if not sooner.

So this book is well worth buying since you get lots of free inspiration. There is also a bonus at the end of the PDF.

Excellent coverage of all aspects of sabbath

I picked up this book because I was interested in the topic of the sabbath year. However, I quickly discovered that, even though the author claims to just be a blue-collar worker with not much education, he has thoroughly researched all aspects of history and he has an incredible depth of knowledge of the Scriptures -- and this book covers a lot more than just the sabbath year.

One thing I appreciated was the chronological listing of years and dates from creation to the present, with explanations of how to interpret the Bible's history with secular history.

I thought the author's explanation of why all Christians -- no, all people in the world -- should obey God's commands, was one of the best I've seen.

This book personally convicted me, as it showed me areas where I'm careless in my obedience to God's commands. In addition, he showed why it is so important for us to share this message with others. It is the very definition of "loving our neighbor as ourselves."

A Long Overdue, "How-To!"

While critically reading this book, what impressed me the most about is that 1). There is no one else doing groundbreaking research in this field on the level Joseph Dumond is. 2). Moreover, there is no one who is taking the pains to break it all down for us in the nuts & bolts sense of the term like he is. It really is true that his books read at a Ph.D. level given how well-researched they are & how Joseph Dumond leaves no stone unturned. Undoubtedly he is, beyond all reasonable & unreasonable doubt, the "Researcher's researcher."

It is refreshing, beyond good & a very great thing indeed to finally have a book one can refer to that enables a person to keep the Sabbatical Years & Jubilee Years based on a biblical calendar vs. any of the existing Orthodox Jewish calendars that, at best, have made many departures from the original biblical model & a book that gives more than a sound basis for steering us all away from living one's life according to the holidays Christians are found observing which have no relation whatsoever to the Feasts, Festivals, solemn occasions, Sabbatical & Jubilee Years YHWH would have us all be found keeping.

This book not only enables those who have ears to hear to live their life in accordance with how YHWH laid it out in Scripture to be living out our days, this book takes keeping the Feasts, Festivals & solemn occasions Karaite Jews, Hebraic Roots devotees, Messianic Jewish adherents & Nazarenes are already found to be keeping, to a whole new level. For many have THIS part of it down pat, but what EVERYONE is overlooking not just to a fault, but to a faultline, is keeping the Sabbatical & Jubilee Years. And yet, this is a very grievous thing in YHWH's sight!

For to be found just keeping some of the Law, but not ALL of it... we are then "weighed in the balance & found wanting" (mene, mene, tekel, parson). This book, therefore, enables & empowers us to keep ALL of the Law & is long overdue! Then again, according to the 70 Shabua of Daniel, it may be RIGHT ON TIME! But praise be to YHWH either way that it is finally, at long last, available to us all for public consumption. May we not defer or neglect to obtain this book & put it into practice in our everyday lives, where the rubber hits the road!

Frazier retells the amazing story of the western plains

Mr. Frazier retells the amazing story of the western plains. He brings the history alive by sharing lesser known facts and anecdotes of well known figures and great events. He brings us into the lives of modern people of the Plains by sharing what he learned meeting them, talking with them, and walking with them in their world. It is not always a pretty story, a sequence of happy endings. It is real, because the humans who lived it were real and we see them in action against a never to be repeated landscape of the opening of the west. It remains a magnificent story, and Ian Frazier tells it brilliantly.

I liked this book very much. It is complicated, interesting, informative and a good study of the 10 plains state and which part of them contains the actual plains. The book is like a large tapestry with many different elements woven in. There is the geography of the land, the plants, animals, people plus much more. This is also a book of joie d' vivre, love of life, a French impressionist painting of the beauty and joy of being alive,the joy of small incidental occurances too easily forgotten. Ian Frazier also uses stream of conscience as different scenes, places and people flash before his eyes. He then goes back in history to the lifestyle of the Indians before the white men came to the plains and how when they did come how riciculous the red men thought the white mens ways and customs were. Then he comes back to today and what is happening now. So, back and forth, back and forth from history to present. Mr Frazier tells of how the plains were becoming settled and civilized and of the colorful characters who lived and helped shape this area into what it would become. Crazy Horse was a favorite and he also liked George Custer and believed Custer also loved this wide open land, some parts rolling, some like a rumpled bed and other areas as flat as a board which makes heaven and earth seem to come together. I believe Mr Frazier loves this wide open country because he spent two years living here and writing about it and driving back and forth crossing much. But he writes back and forth from past history to present. But the book ends concerning future times and is concerned with nuclear missal sites. Tomorrow land

Sure is flat, isn't it?

Great Plains is an enjoyable book, a sweeping, eclectic view of a part of America many of us see only from airplane windows. It reads like what it mostly is, an extended (old-style) New Yorker piece, though Ian Frazier is no John McPhee.

Indians, cowboys, ranchers, farmers, charlatans, outlaws, explorers, miners, soldiers - they're all here as Frazier zigzags up and down the 100th meridian in his beat-up van. The picture that he paints is of a vast, mostly empty region, across which many have wandered but few have stayed. It is bleak but Frazier finds it invigorating.

The book is now twenty years old and some of the material is even older, so there are places where it sounds dated, as in the Cold War references in the discussion of the nuclear missile installations spread across the northern Plains.

The only place where Frazier failed, I think, was in his compressed discussion of the final years of Crazy Horse. There are too many characters and too much action to fit into twenty pages. It left me confused. Frazier joins many in his admiration of Crazy Horse, but the formal demands of this kind of journalism preclude extended biography.

But that is a minor nitpick for an otherwise good read. Recommended.
