Better then some other AMSCO releases

For once I am not really going to slam how bad the tabs are in these AMSCO books. For years I myself and many others have screamed blue murder at AMSCO for transcribing AC/DC songs so poorly, but in this one, at least they have finally gotten the message and updated a couple of transcription to show them how Angus and Malcolm really play these songs. Notable corrections can be seen on; "You Shook Me All Night Long" & "It's a long way to the top"; however the have failed to mention you need to tune up one step for "Long way to the top" or at least use a capo.

However, what I will still complain about is the songs that have not been corrected and are still the same old tabs with bad solos or extra notes in chords that should not be there. This being the case with "Dirty Deeds", "Dog Eat Dog", "T.N.T", "Let There Be Rock", "For those About To Rock", "Rock N Roll ain't Noise Pollution", "Hard as a Rock" & "Back In Black" (possibly more). These mistakes determine what song it is, some of them get it pretty close, like Dirty Deeds and For Those About To Rock, however the have added in notes to chords that are not played in the song. Take for example For Those About To Rock, the tab shows the opening chord as...

A|------|
E|------|
The B strings showing of 12 is not played by Angus. Even tho it might sound OK, Angus himself has stated he only uses the G and E string to play the song, it's not a 3 note chord. If anything was to be put there on the B string, it should be a bunch of X's.

Other songs you could probably get away with, the notes are correct, but they are in the wrong position, for example on Back In Black, that part that is shown E|-7-4--7-5--7-6--7-7\--|
should be done with two strings and look more something like...

A|-2----2----2----2-----|
E|---4----5----6----7---|

Even tho they are the same note, fans want to play these things the way AC/DC do, and there is technical reasons why it is better to do it that way I have shown, the way AC/DC really do, do it. Then there is also a part at the end of the Chorus that is showing G bar chords... Bar chords are not something Malcolm or Angus really have ever played too many times on recordings, or even live, and therefor it would be nice for AMSCO to realize that any old G chord will not do when it comes to the style and sound of Angus & Malcolm Young. (use the same G shown earlier in the piece, and rarely do you ever include the top string note (top E-3) of the chord.

I could go on forever about these things, but that would just be me repeating everything I have said in just about every review I have done of AMSCO tabs. It seems AMSCO has had various people take charge of transcribing AC/DC songs, and I like whoever is doing it now better then whoever was in charge of is previously. The only downfall to this is you only get fresh transcriptions from newer or first time transcribed songs. And even then, some of them are not perfect, but at least they are better then what that dimwit transcribed for "Whole Lotta Rosie" in the "Best of AC/DC" book... however, it this IS still the same person who transcribed "Dirty Eyes" for the "Bonfire" release, I would like to strangle him for not getting that track right, and not even bothering to transcribe the demo version of the songs found on that album, they just used the recorded versions instead.

Overall, this book is decent for new comers to learn AC/DC songs. However, I don't recommend you pay a great lot for this book, I picked up mine cheap, figuring it would be nice to slam how bad it is from a first hand perspective, but even what AMAZONS asking price is, seek a much better price, or look for the tabs online in Guitar Pro format (look it up).

I'd give this book 3 and a half stars, even some of the newer songs are not quite right, but they are close enough and you will get the idea of how the songs go, but as for the older songs I mentioned, you might get something out of them, but take my word, some of them are even simpler to play then they look in these books with extra notes in chords etc..

Buy it if interests you, you may get something out of it, but just keep in mind what I have told you about these books.

Understandable architectural theory

Eugene Raskin's "Architecturally Speaking" in the 1966 edition that I have brings clarity and conviction to the sometimes arcane field of architecture. In a series of chapters he addresses architecture, style, unity, scale, rhythm, originality, proportion, sequences, composition, and functionalism, ending with a less helpful chapter on character and honesty.

Raskin writes persuasively, as in this example: "Sequence, then, besides being a progression of elements of mounting interest, each of which is a preparation of the next, is in its totality a preparation of the climax. A design will be a total failure if the preparation is inadequate for the climax, or if the climax does not measure up to the preparation." He is sometimes skeptical of revered definitions, saying "Time and motion are inseparable from the perception of architecture, which is the basis for my strong disagreement with Goethe's euphonious `frozen music' expression." The book has a particularly good discussion on the user's experiences and perceptions while entering a building.

The author's conviction comes without conceit: "As we continue to discuss those aspects of architecture whose treatment makes it `good' or `bad,' I shall necessarily expose my own bias. If the reader's prejudices happen to coincide with mine, he will probably not notice the bias at all."

The book is short: 129 pages including several full page drawings of minor meaning. I know of no other equally concise exposition on architecture that conveys as much information as understandably. This would be my first recommended book for a non-specialist who wanted to know more about the broad principles of architecture without learning an extensive new vocabulary and without delving into architectural history, and specific designs.

Great book!

I am a graduate student at Fresno State earning my Masters in Viticulture & Enology. This book is a very practical and user friendly book for fundamental principles. The chapters are well thought out. The only problems I have is that 1. there is an embarrassingly high amount of typos in this book, but nothing that would confuse the reader and 2. some of the topics are lacking in detail. But this is definitely a great book and I greatly appreciate the references at the end of each chapter. Also you cannot beat the price point, very reasonable. If you are looking for something more scientifically technical regarding vine physiology, I would highly recommend Markus Kellers "Science of Grapevines" while this book is more production oriented.

Excellent Overview of Viticulture

This book gives you a very good working knowledge of viticulture. Not only does it discuss some of the more traditional subjects―site selection, vineyard establishment, planting and training young grapevines, and pruning--but offers a wealth of information on other topics not typically addressed in other books such as rootstocks, canopy management, plant nutrition, deficit irrigation, cover cropping, frost protection, pest management, harvest parameters and so on. This book is so full of useful information I consider it a reference book and in a class of its own.

Better than Definitely Dead...

I wasn't exactly thrilled with Definitely Dead, since it felt as though Harris was trying to cram in all of the characters and subplots into two-hundred-something pages. I also didn't like the totally lame twists regarding Bill. I thought it was a little too convenient for my taste. So, I wondered if the series had jumped the shark and if I should read the next book. All Together Dead, while not as good as Dead to the World, my favorite Sookie book so far, was far more enjoyable than its predecessor. It was time for the vampire summit, and Sookie, our adorable telepathic heroine, under orders from Eric and Sophie-Anne, the Queen of Louisiana, is forced to attend. In addition to Eric and the queen, Sookie would join boyfriend weretiger Quinn and vampire ex-boyfriend Bill. Sookie also reunites with Barry the Bellboy, a fellow telepath introduced in Living Dead in Dallas. The summit, aside from parties and business conventions, would also feature a few criminal trials, one of which is the queen's trial for the murder of her husband (Definitely Dead). But, as expected when vampires get together, strange things begin to occur. Vampires turn out dead. The murders seem to be connected with the queen's trial. But soon bigger threats arise, and it is up to Sookie and Barry the Bellboy to figure out what is going on. There are some twists throughout the novel.

When the action began, the novel was quite riveting. I liked some of the twists that went on toward the end as well. I also liked the inner conflicts Sookie was encountering. She has reached a point where she doesn't know if her life will ever be normal again. Her connection with the vampires become more integral in this installment, and I think that Harris foreshadows Sookie's descent from having a fairly average life to one solely centered on the supernaturals around her. Other than those good points, I thought the novel was all over the place. There was little resolution regarding Sookie and the men in her life. She cares for Quinn, and she likes that he seems more normal than the vampires, but she doesn't know if she loves him. She also doesn't know how she feels for Eric. And she has unresolved issues with Bill, whom she still resents for having lied to her. (On a good note, it appears that Bill shows genuine remorse for everything he had done to her. Come on, Sookie, the guy's sorry! Sookie is being petty and downright childish when it comes to him. I wonder for how much longer the author will drag this on.) There is little interaction with Quinn and Eric -- the latter of whom is very sexy in this installment. If she were to choose between these two men, I'd like for her to choose Eric. (But, to be honest, I still prefer Bill.) However, I believe the journey is better than the destination, so I don't mind more romantic tension between her and Eric and Bill (more with the latter please!). Quinn is a little more developed here, but I don't like him much. I tried to, but I can't picture a bald-headed, olive-skinned, beefy guy without picturing a pro wrestler or Mr. Clean. I also hate his annoying habit of addressing Sookie as "babe." Going back to Sookie and Bill, there is no closure between them. Bill was just sort of there, making brief appearances throughout the novel. He went from a strong lead to sort of a filler character, and I'm not happy with that. Secondary characters are thrown in and out without much purpose. (I did like the scene where Pam talks about her past though.) Even though I like the simple scenes of Sookie working at the bar or interacting with her small town buddies, those scenes in this book seemed forced. All in all, All Together Dead is rushed and uneven. Charlaine Harris should really forget about the small characters and concentrate on Sookie and the main characters. She tries to do too much in a limited amount of pages. I give this novel four stars because it was entertaining nevertheless and there were some hilarious passages. I especially enjoyed the scenes with roommate Amelia and her cat/boyfriend Bob. The Southern Vampire Mysteries is still worth reading, but Harris should do one of the following two things: either do a little house-cleaning with the characters and subplots, or consider making the future novels longer. So it may be time to get her publisher to increase her word count limit.

Walk Like An Egyptian. Or a Britlingen.

In this, the seventh installment of Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire series, we enter an expanded world. Heroine Sookie Stackhouse has grown from being mere barmaid in a small town to being telepathic aide-de-camp to Queen Sophie of Louisiana at a summit of vamps and others in the city of Rhodes. The situs of the convention, the Hotel Gizeh, bears a striking resemblance to the Luxor in Las Vegas which, when combined with the vampire patronized Anubis Airlines, adds a nice undead Egyptian touch.

However, Sophie Anne arrives at the meeting somewhat depleted. Hurricane Katrina has ravaged her queendom, killing many of her subjects and doing untold property damage. Additionally, she is charged with the murder of her husband, and Sookie alone is witness to the facts that can exonerate her at the upcoming trial. Underlings vie for position, rivals plot overthrows, and potential suitors connive for a powerful alliance. In other words, your typical regional professional meeting.

Mix in Sookie's growing romance with were-tiger Quinn (grrrowl!), political intrigue and power plays, otherworldly bodyguards known as the Britlingens, and a cast of new characters representing vampire royalty from all over the U.S., and you have a wonderful fresh tale. I marvel at the imagination of Harris as she plucks new beings and social systems from out of seeming thin air and breaths life into them with absolute believability and skill.

This is a transitional novel, and as such some of the dramatic tension of the earlier books is replaced with laying the foundation for what promises to be a dynamite next chapter in this exciting and ever-entertaining series. Why does the cover art show Sookie clinging to Eric as they fly on an obviously preoccupied coffin? Well I'll let you find that out on your own.

OK, Maybe Seven is Just An Unlucky Number

I admit I'm part of the problem--I refused to read this series for WAY too long because I thought the name Sookie was too stupid for a character.

Wrong about that--Sookie is perfectly written as the Southern blue-collar worker she is by someone who knows this area and people. So much of the author's work is dead-on perfect--says THIS escaped rural Southener--like needing a flashlight to walk down a country road because there is no light--at all! You need to have been there/done that to respect what a perfect detail that is to include. But I felt sorry for Sookie during this entire story. She is not being treated well by her paranormal associates and this gal needs a break! From the moment her hare-brained brother gets married in a ceremony with potentially serious consequences for Sookie to being pushed around by vamp politics, I wanted something nice to happen. She's starting to seem like a victim and I'm worried about her future. From a novel I read for fun and relaxation--I don't need that kind of trouble.

Excellent resource!

I found this book at the library, and liked it so much that I'll be buying my own copy shortly. I have several books on medicinal herbs. This is the best one I've seen for telling you exactly how to prepare and use the herbal remedies in the book. She doesn't cover everything, but it's a very good beginning, and her directions on preparation and use will apply to other herbs that are mentioned in other books.

My backyard pharmacy

I'm a book junkie. Yes, I admit it. But I have gotten more picky, which is why I hesitated for at least a week before ordering this book. And yes, I'm glad I gave in to the urge. I have read it through once and am destined to read it bit by bit many more times. There is enough science to satisfy the nurse in me, but also a strong connection to the more esoteric aspect of being an herbalist. My formal herbal study has been in the Celtic tradition so Julie Bruton-Seal's selection of plants is ideal for me. A large number of her favorite plants are growing near me. She has given me a different view of many different plant properties to consider. My back yard is my major pharmacy, and this lovely resource will broaden its scope and capability. The Celts had a strong thread of practicality that included using what was close at hand. I am following my roots and appreciate additional guidance in the journey.

A great little book with most of the common plants locally available detailed. It has a description, uses listing and recipes for each plant. Also included are common contra-indications. A very handy resource to have around when the flu bug come buzzing by!

Fasting? No problem.

The author and monastic Monk Epifanios of Mylopotamos Monastery in Holy Mt. Athos shares the wisdom of 2000 years in this fascinating (and mouthwatering) journey into the world of monastic cooking and faith. Written in his uniquely friendly and familiar style the book contains recipes and monastic and biblical excerpts that accompany each of the recipes. The brilliant humanity of the Church Fathers is conveyed in the selection of sayings and biblical verses. There is also a breathtaking overview of the cuisine of Byzantium and its influences on us today. Monk father Epifanios concludes this book by his essay regarding food and society...and the love that encompasses our pursuit and preparation of healthy foods.

A Beautiful Book

"The Cuisine of the Holy Mountain Athos" by Epiphanios of Mylopotamos is far more than a cook book. It is like a journey into Mount Athos through their cuisine.

First of all, I would like to say that this is a physically beautiful book packed with high quality color photos of Mount Athos, the monasteries, monks in the fields, monks preparing food, monks eating and of course delicious looking picture of the dishes they serve.

The book itself includes two introductions and one hundred and twenty-six recipes divided into three categories - (1) Fish, (2) Legumes and Olive Oil based Meals and (3) Molluscs and Shellfish.

The introductions are fascinating in their own right. First, Theodoros Ioannidis has prepared a short introduction about food and Mount Athos entitled "Victuals and Psalms. Beverages and Hymns." This is followed by a more lengthy introduction by Thanasis Georgiadis about Greek culinary heritage entitled "The Culinary Art of Glorious Byzantium."

As a cook book, "The Cuisine of the Holy Mountain" is remarkably insightful and user friendly. Epiphanios has prepared a forward for each section explaining which ingredients are used on Athos and why. The individual recipes are straight forward to follow and Epiphanios regularly explains which ingredients are optional and how the individual ingredients affect the flavour of the dish. Each recipe is also accompanied by a proverb that is good food for thought. I will not that there are no meat based dishes in this book as the monks on Mount Athos do not eat meat.

This is an excellent book that I would highly recommend to anyone interested in tasty and health food. This book is essential for anyone interested in Greek cuisine or history. "The Cuisine of the Holy Mountain" would also be highly recommended for anyone curious about monasticism or Mount Athos in particular. It is a real eye opener and to be honest, the food is so good, it is hard to believe that it is healthy and meat free.

It is awesome for fish days

This book is not strictly vegan, though there are lots of vegan recipes for fasting. About half of this book is devoted to fresh, delicious fish. It is awesome for fish days! The recipes are all simple to prepare, but quite flavorful.

In addition, the book is lovely to read with entertaining quotations and beautiful photography. This is the best Orthodox cookbook that I have seen.

Please note that the recipes are in in metric measurements. Also, unless you live near a shore, you might have difficulty procuring the variety of fish that these recipes call for.
