Reads like a first draft

Reads like a first draft. The pacing is all over the place, made worse by jarring transitions and overwhelming info dumps. The use of "you" to refer to Sael is the sort of kitschy trick that might have worked if better executed, but as is, it's off putting and gimmicky. Speaking of Sael, she's some sort of disturbing cross between a manic pixie dream girl, a Mary Sue (which is a term often overused to diminish female characters and not one I use lightly) and an adolescent boy's fantasy girlfriend. Awkwardly formal dialogue clashes with cheesy one-liners, and the prose jumps back and forth between unnecessarily complex and overly colloquial. The premise reads like someone threw a bunch of fantasy and scifi tropes into a hat and picked out a bunch at random. Melding scifi and fantasy can work, but it here it feels contrived and overdone. I only read the first part of the sample offered by Amazon, so maybe it takes a 360 later on, but even if it does I don't know how people kept reading long enough to get there. This needed a good beta read and at least a couple of rewrites.

Great read!

I loved this book! I'm an avid reader, mostly of murder/mystery novels but fantasy/sci-fi comes a close second in genres for me. I was fascinated by the worlds created and described in the book and I loved the characters, even if they did act a little cheesy at times! Just added to the story in my opinion. I recommend this book to everyone!

I absolutely loved this book. It has humour, steam, romance, action, bullets flying, a HEA and I really can't wait to read more.

I've read a few of this author's books and loved them. I have never been disappointed and that's true of this one too. I absolutely loved it. 'Rimshot's Hard Target' is the second book in the Bad Boys of Beta Squad series by Siobhan Muir and I was given a copy by the author in exchange for an honest review. Once I started reading, I was totally immersed in the story and really didn't want to put it down. It gripped me from beginning to end, and gave me a list of other books by Siobhan I have absolutely got to read.

Navy SEAL Kevin 'Rimshot' Stanton has had two things, well women, on his mind for the last year and every time his brain gets a free moment his thoughts turn to them. The first is his sister Bethany, who has been missing for the last 15 months. The second is former SEAL Chris 'Ghost' Hunter's best friend, Jaime Henson. They met at Chris and Todd 'Magic' Hunter's wedding and he regrets not hooking up with her then. Now, sitting and moping at Bronco and Lindsey's wedding, Ghost offers him a way to kill two birds with one stone when she suggests that Rimshot hires Jaime to look for Bethany. She's a private investigator who specialises in missing persons because of her sister Mia's disappearance 22 years ago. Rimshot's mother once told him that her family has the gift of foresight, and when he shakes hands with Jaime he is overwhelmed by the awareness that she is his destiny and he'd better not scare her away. That might be harder than it seems because, despite her modern attitude to men and sex, Jaime has spent the last year thinking about him too.

I absolutely loved this story about Kevin and Jaime's growing relationship as she searches for Bethany. I'm not going to give any spoilers, but among the twists and turns, there are some surprises in store for both of them, some good, some unbelievable and some heartbreaking, especially for Jaime when she finds the bad guys, or rather they kidnap her. This story has humour, steam, romance, action, bad guys to fight, bullets flying, and a HEA for Kevin and Jaime. I can't wait for the next one, and I absolutely have to read Chris's story as well as Bethany's.

This book is a crossover novella in Cat Johnson's Hot SEALs collection published by Amazon Kindle Worlds, which, sadly, is currently only available in the US.

Good blend of mystery and romance

I liked this story about a active Navy Seal trying to find his sister that had went missing. Kevin “Rimshot” Stanton just couldn't get over her disappearance that had yealded no clues as to what happened to her. His father didn't really seem to care and he was at loose ends on who to contact to help. One night out with his team mates its mentioned he should hire Jaime Hensen a local PI who is known to find even the impossible. Rimshot's never forgotten the one time he met Jamie which was at his friends wedding which they both walked away from without acting on their attraction.

Over twenty years ago Jamie's older sister went missing. Jamie has made it her life's goal to find her or at least what happened to her and went on to college to become the best tracker she could. When Kevin comes to her wanting her help to find his sister she was both happy to take the case and to finally get to act on the feelings they had at the wedding.

Right up until the end I enjoyed the story and was curious as to what happened to Kevin's sister. I never dreamt we'd also get to find out what happened to Jamie's sister too. The last chapter is where I realized the author tied in a story that was started in another series of hers. It kind of took me out of the story a little as that series is a paranormal series and without having read it was a little confused. Other than that I really enjoyed Rimshot's Hard Target.

Part really good and part "really?"

3.5 stars for me. Quite entertaining and keeps you guessing until close to the end. I loved Jaime and Kevin together. They were equally matched with each bringing clear strengths into the relationship. And I'm down with any strong female who can hold her own and knows her mind. Kevin is a SEAL and his "alpha-ness" goes without saying. What a hunk. The loss of a couple of stars is because of three things that didn't completely work for me. Clearly, these were not an issue for most reviewers but for me they detracted from an otherwise solid book. No spoilers here, just opinions: 1. Chris' husband. Didn't see that one coming and didn't need it. My guess is that it ties into another book, though. 2. I love me a good, sizzling hot bedroom scene but I almost felt like a voyeur. Jaime was almost intimidating. 3. The resolution to Bethany's story. I enjoyed the part with Stephen but the rest was just too weird for me. Again, well written and enjoyable book and I can see why others love it. I didn't and that's what makes the world an interesting place. And obviously, I liked it enough to finish it, so there's definitely a lot of good there.

An Excellent Reference for Airline Managers and Students

I found this book to be among the best written about the airline industry. It is clear and straight-forward. It is packed with excellent notes and references for further study. This incredible achievement must be given to Paul Dempsey and Laurence Gesell for their outstanding efforts in delivering the most relevant business strategies for successful airlines into the next century.
I must strongly disagree with the crude and unsophisticated review given by another reviewer here.
This book delivered far beyond my expectations. GET IT!

A commendable introduction to the airline industry

This is the first academic book on the airline industry that I read and I still consider it the most readable one. However, as other reviewers have correctly pointed out, the book's title is blatantly misleading: This is by no means a manual delineating airline strategies for the 21st century but rather a thorough introduction to the airline industry and to the U.S. airline industry in particular. Apart from the odd subtitle, though, the book does live up to the expectations by brilliantly explaining the basics of airline management, and some chapters - especially the ones on airline economics, planning and price - are written so well and are so easy to understand that I would like to recommend Mr Dempsey and Mr Gesell's work to any student aiming to make himself familiar with the peculiarities of the airline industry.
Still, there are two minor omissions in this book that deserve to be noted. Firstly, the book having been published in 1997 only scarce mention is being made of the internet's role as a competitive tool used to enhance direct distribution within the industry; considering that nowadays more and more airlines are relying on internet technology in order to contain their operating costs, this is a point that truly needs to be updated. Secondly - and as has already been pointed out - the book's industry analysis focusses on the situation in the U.S., thus for the most part leaving aside the European and Asian markets where the airline industry tends to be heavily regulated and where the challenges airline managers are up against can be very different from the ones in the U.S.
All in all, however, this book offers a detailed and surprisingly readable introduction to the airline industry, and anybody who as yet has not read anything on the subject will not be disappointed in choosing the work by Mr Dempsey and Mr Gesell.

A Must For Any Aviation Professional!

This book went into great detail regarding the economics, finance, and other managerial perspectives of the airline industry. Included were several helpful tables, graphs and statistics. This book complemented an airline operations course I recently completed at college, within an aviation management program. This book serves as a great reference and will not collect dust on my shelf! Dempsey exhibits remarkable expertise throughout the chapters in this book. Anyone planning on going into any kind of aviation career should read this to remain knowledgeable of current situations within the airline industry. Overall, this has been the best aviation textbook I've read throughout my undergraduate training.

He focuses particularly on the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that drives motivation, monitors homeostasis, and ultimately keeps us alive via neural, autonomic, and hormonal adjustments. He presents evidence that long-run growth can be attributed to variances in hypothalmic activity.A physioeconomic approach to growth can lead to better economic policies, measures of performance, and predictions of progress. To take just one example, policymakers would be quicker to realize that food aid to warmer regions can destroy local farming economies that supply adequate caloric needs at a lower steady state.

10 years ahead of its time

At the time he wrote it (yes, Phil Parker produces many books by algorithm, but this was not one of them), this book was far ahead of its time. The observation that latitude correlated to economic performance (farther north = higher GDP per capita) was dismissed as a quirk until recently. But now there is a large and growing literature on it in economics: the effect seems quite real. As I write this, I'm sitting in a seminar by Geoffrey Heal from Columbia on this topic. Even year by year, a change in average temperature in a year has a measurable effect on GDP. The effect is not uniform: it's stronger in warm countries/poor countries. There is a parallel literature looking at individual performance. The optimal level is around 20C or 70F.

By the way, there is a scary empirical literature suggesting that heat stress in utero has a measurable negative effect on lifetime IQ of the baby! That suggests there is a critical period during the pregnancy when mothers should be kept in air conditioning, and should not exert themselves in warm weather! I used to think air conditioning was a luxury for wimps. (Not counting Arizona, of course.) It seems I was wrong.

Seiichiro Kawase is a director at the Kashima Space Communication Center and was formerly a visiting professor at the University of Electro-Communications in Tokyo. He earned his B.E. and M.E. in mechanical engineering at the Tokyo Institute of Technology and his D.E. in electronic engineering at Tokyo University.

Not a Rigorous Treatment

I may have been able to tell this from the various descriptions or from the table of contents, but this book has very little mathematical detail. Now, with that said, the coverage of the subject is excellent, especially in examination of noise sources and how this limits results, but again at a very non-mathematical level. This book is not for a physicist, electrical engineer or anyone looking to apply these techniques in their field.
